What is the TOEFL?

The TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, exam is the most widely-accepted test for non-native English speaking International College Students to evaluate English skills such as reading, writing and comprehension. Over 7,500 colleges and universities  areas accept the TOEFL as a benchmark of the English-speaking and comprehension skills needed to attend schools in the U.S.

Who should take the TOEFL?

  • Non-native English speakers who already hold a college degree from another country.
  • Non-native English speakers with at least two years of higher-level English instruction.
  • 11th Grade students preparing to apply to U.S. colleges and Universities.
  • Students transferring to a U.S. college or university from another country.

What does the TOEFL exam entail?

The TOEFL tests how well you can read, write and understand English language within an academic setting. It consists of four different sections that require you to listen, read, write and speak English through a computer interface. The exam takes several hours and each of the four sections receives a score of 0-30, for a total score of 0-120.

What should I know for each section of the TOEFL exam?

  • The Listening Section tests your English comprehension through audio recordings. After listening to therecordings, you then answer questions about what you heard.
  • The Reading Section tests your English comprehension through text.  After reading pieces of academic writing, you must then answer questions that test your understanding.
  • The Speaking Section tests English speaking ability by asking you to verbally give your opinion on a topic.
  • The Writing Section tests your English language skills by requiring you to write two essays.
